Negotiations on senior employment: still blocking points before a decisive meeting between unions and employers

This is the last chance session for the social partners, who meet on Monday April 8 in the morning at Medef headquarters to try to find an agreement on this “life at work pact”. This text concerns in particular the employment of seniors and should, in theory, lead to new unemployment insurance rules. But the latest version of the project, submitted by employers to the unions, is still far from unanimous.

The social partners are keen to conclude an agreement, and these are important subjects, which are intended to be enshrined in law. The text on the table will oblige all companies with more than 300 employees to negotiate on the continued employment of seniors, but there are still sticking points. Employers are reluctant to finance specific part-time work on their own for employees at the end of their careers, and above all the unions are still opposed to the idea of a senior permanent contract, pushed by employers.

The latter must improve his copy, according to CFE-CGC negotiator Jean-François Foucard. “There is no compensation, no individual or collective advantage today for employees”, he laments. If there is a concession, the employers will only let go at the very end of the session: “It’s always their strategy”deplores a negotiator on the union side.

But we will have to seek these concessions to improve working conditions and the hiring of seniors, while the government wants a new reform of unemployment insurance with tougher rules for job seekers, in particular older.
