two years left to adjust measures against warming

Governments, economic leaders and banks financing global development projects have two years left to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The executive secretary of the UN Climate Change Framework, Simon Steel, said the next two years are “essential to saving our planet.”

Steele sounded a warning in London on Wednesday about the potential for global warming to change the world’s political agenda.

Scientists say cutting greenhouse emissions by half by 2030 could limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

But last year, carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere increased to record levels. The current commitments of states to curb global warming are unlikely to make it possible to reduce CO2 emissions to any extent by 2030.

Simon Steel, speaking at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London (since April 2022 has the status of an undesirable organization in Russia) said that the group of 20 most economically developed countries, taken together, are responsible for 80% of global emissions into the atmosphere and must urgently take action measures.

The main event of this year will be climate talks in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Negotiators are expected to agree on financial assistance for developing countries to transition away from fossil fuels.
