Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh ends her duties as Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations

New York, April 13 / WAM / Her Excellency Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh has completed her position as Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, where she held her last meeting with Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, to be succeeded by Ambassador Mohammed Abu Shehab, who will present his credentials next Monday after his appointment from Before His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, “may God protect him.”

Her Excellency Nusseibeh, who will return to Abu Dhabi and will continue to hold her position as Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed her thanks to the Secretary-General for his solid partnership and support for the UAE’s efforts in defending priority issues, including Gaza and Afghanistan, in addition to promoting the values ​​of tolerance, peace and coexistence. Peaceful, advancing the role of women and girls around the world, and advancing climate action.

In a related context, Her Excellency held a meeting to bid farewell to His Excellency Dennis Francis, President of the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Her Excellency Ambassador Nusseibeh has served as the Permanent Representative of the UAE since September 2013. Her Excellency led the adoption of many historic Security Council resolutions that the UAE participated in drafting during its membership in the Council throughout the years 2022 and 2023, including Resolution No. 2686, which recognized for the first time that hate speech, Racism, gender discrimination, and misinformation contribute to the outbreak, aggravation, and recurrence of conflicts, as well as Resolution No. 2681, which condemned the Taliban’s prevention of Afghan women and girls from working for the United Nations in Afghanistan, and also Resolution No. 2720, which laid the foundation for the establishment of a United Nations mechanism, to Increase and facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid that Palestinians desperately need in the Gaza Strip.

Her Excellency said on this occasion, “I had the great honor of serving the UAE for more than a decade at the United Nations. The international system based on the rule of law and mutual respect for each other is the way to preserve the security of us all and enable us to achieve prosperity.”

She added, “Preserving this international system and making it fair has become an extremely important issue more than ever in our contemporary history in light of the emergence of urgent global challenges and the growing intensity of polarization at the international level. The Permanent Mission of the UAE will continue its endeavors to achieve these goals through our work with the United Nations.” Under the leadership of Ambassador Mohamed Abu Shehab and the commitment of the dedicated team in the field of multilateral work, with whom I have had the honor of working during these past years.”

In a related context, Her Excellency Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh sought to find common ground between the member states of the Security Council, especially during the difficult times experienced by international peace and security.

Prior to the country’s membership in the Security Council, Her Excellency Ambassador Nusseibeh held the position of co-chair of the intergovernmental negotiations on reform of the Council from 2017 to 2019. Through this position, Her Excellency led and directed discussions related to reform of the Security Council. In 2017, Her Excellency assumed the position of President Executive Board of UN Women, and Vice-President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Her Excellency Ambassador Nusseibeh also served as co-chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Revitalizing the Work of the General Assembly during the period extending between 2016 and 2017, where during her co-chairmanship she oversaw a procedural change in the mechanism for selecting the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, which led to a more cooperative and transparent process. .

Her Excellency Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh has co-chaired the Friends of the Future of the United Nations with the United Kingdom since 2015, an informal forum in which views are frankly exchanged on pressing issues affecting the future of the United Nations.

It is noteworthy that, throughout her period of work in the UAE’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Her Excellency Ambassador Nusseibeh followed a practical, principles-based approach that embodies the principles of the UAE’s foreign policy on the international scene.

Her Excellency has also built regional and multilateral partnerships, and has followed innovative ways to confront global challenges. During the coming period, the UAE will continue its partnership and commitment to working with the United Nations in New York and around the world.
