Olympic opening ceremony: have a plan B "seems more reasonable to me"estimates former police director Frédéric Péchenard

Guest of franceinfo Monday April 15, Frédéric Péchenard, vice-president of the Republicans of the Île-de-France region and former director general of the national police, said “unquestionably” reassured after the alternatives presented by Emmanuel Macron to organize the opening ceremony of the Paris Games. The Head of State indicated that in the event of a high terrorist threat, this ceremony planned on the Seine could be restricted to the Trocadéro or even be repatriated to the Stade de France.

The announcement of this plan B comes three months before the opening ceremony, organized on July 26. “I would hope that the people in charge of security had considered a plan B” before Emmanuel Macron’s declarations, he continues. “It’s now on the table, it’s official and frankly, that’s good. It all seems more reasonable to me.”

This plan B was a necessity raised last December by Frédéric Péchenard. “It seemed absolutely essential to me to think of a plan B. That doesn’t mean that we necessarily have to implement it, but we have to have it in reserve”he emphasizes.

“When the opening ceremony was planned, the terrorist risk was not as great as it is today”adds Frédéric Péchenard. “There was October 7 and the Hamas attack, the war in the Gaza Strip, the war in Ukraine, the attack claimed by Daesh in Russia, the attack on Iran recently. And we know that “Every time there is an international event that happens, there can be repercussions on our soil”he emphasizes.
