Fujairah reviews energy projects and initiatives to achieve climate neutrality during the World Future Energy Summit
ABU DHABI, 17 April 2020 – The Fujairah government participated in the activities of the World Future Energy Summit 2024 in Abu Dhabi, where 6 government agencies in the emirate reviewed their most prominent initiatives in the field of sustainability and clean and renewable energy, and announced their most important current and future projects, in line with the vision of the Emirate of Fujairah and the relevant national agenda. Participating in the Fujairah Government Pavilion are the Fujairah Municipality, the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation, the Fujairah Petroleum Industry Zone (Foz), the Fujairah Environment Authority, and the Fujairah Research Center.
His Excellency Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, Director General of the Fujairah Municipality, said that the participation of the Fujairah government in the summit is of utmost importance for its role in supporting the sustainable development goals of the Emirate of Fujairah in particular and the UAE in general, indicating that the event is an opportunity to learn about best practices from other parties participating in the event. The exhibition works to support the energy of the future and learn about the most important clean energy solutions and interest in the renewable energy industry.
Al-Afkham stated that the municipality’s participation consists of presenting the largest residential project in Fujairah (Mohammed bin Zayed City), which is the first sustainable city in the emirate, designed according to the highest health and safety standards. He explained that from this standpoint, the sorting initiative was activated from the source, which strengthens the foundations of development. The municipality’s participation also includes a wastewater treatment and solid waste treatment project and an organic fertilizer production unit, which is considered the first 100% organic fertilizer and the adoption of environmental standards in production, in addition to the integrated management of cooking grease oils.
For his part, His Excellency Engineer Ali Qasim, Director General of the Fujairah Natural Resources Foundation, said: The Foundation’s participation comes as a translation of the vision and directives of the wise leadership in implementing the paths of the green economy by innovating modern ways and methods to enhance energy efficiency, rationalize consumption, and find alternative solutions to traditional energy, explaining that the Foundation adopts A well-thought-out road map through which it seeks to implement all sustainability standards through its activities applied in all its sectors, and to consolidate its unique imprint in the fields of energy and apply the highest international standards for green buildings, which contributes to strengthening the leadership of the Emirate of Fujairah in the field of sustainability and the shift towards clean and renewable energy sources.
At the World Future Energy Summit, the Corporation presented a comprehensive overview of its role in supporting economic diversification in the emirate and the strategic initiatives and projects it launched, including the use of clean and renewable energy, the carbon neutrality initiative, the application of a water management system to rationalize water consumption and improve the efficiency of its use, and the policy of rationalizing energy consumption in the Corporation’s buildings.
The organization also revealed, in conjunction with the launch of the activities of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, that it had obtained the global certificate of conformity to the ISO standard (ISO 50001:2018) in the energy management system. It received this accreditation in honor of its efforts in implementing energy management systems and enhancing its efficiency and commitment to adopting sustainable practices in all aspects of its operational operations. And its various services, making the corporation the first entity in the Fujairah government to obtain this certificate in this field.
The Fujairah Petroleum Industry Zone’s participation in this event comes based on its strategic vision aimed at accelerating the pace of achieving sustainable development by creating environmentally friendly investment opportunities.
In turn, His Excellency Captain Salem Al Afkham, Director General of the Fujairah Petroleum Industries Zone, confirmed that the zone is working to apply the principle of “one zone safety culture” to all petroleum investments in the emirate through the health, safety, environment and quality management system, where all investments and companies are committed to complying with the rules of this system. To achieve an integrated and sustainable petroleum region that operates in accordance with the highest global standards for reducing emissions and applying the latest environmentally friendly technologies.
During their participation, the Fujairah Environment Authority and the Fujairah Research Center are also reviewing a number of joint projects that serve the environment and renewable energy sector, which include the use of solar panels to supply energy to green agricultural homes, electronic nose devices, seawater quality measuring stations, and meteorological devices, which are considered the latest projects of the Authority and the Center. Her Excellency Asila Al Mualla, Director of the Fujairah Environment Authority, stated that their third consecutive participation since the establishment of the Fujairah Environment Authority is the largest participation in a series of successful participations, which is solid evidence of our progress with steady steps towards a sustainable future for the Emirate of Fujairah, stressing the authority’s commitment to achieving the state’s climate neutrality strategy.
