Indonesia evacuates thousands of residents and closes an international airport due to a volcanic eruption "Ruang"

Jakarta, April 18, 2018 (WAM) – Today, the Indonesian authorities announced the evacuation of thousands of people after the eruption of Mount Ruang volcano on the island of Sulawesi, in the north of the country, which also prompted the closure of a nearby international airport and the issuance of a warning of falling rocks that could cause tsunami waves. , tsunami.
The Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency explained, in a statement, that about 11,000 people were evacuated from the area near the volcano, which includes Tagulang Island, with a population of about 20,000 people, due to the volcanic eruption and the fall of materials in the form of small rocks.
The Indonesian authorities also closed Manado International Airport, located 100 kilometers from the volcano, for 24 hours.
The eruption of Mount Ruang volcano began on Tuesday evening and was repeated four times yesterday, Wednesday, spewing a huge cloud of ash, prompting the authorities to raise the alert level to the highest level.
