Paris 2024: chips, beers and pizzas… These products which could be on the consumption podium during the Olympics

The France of the Olympics… and the aperitif. Less than 100 days before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a Nielsen IQ study gives an idea of the aperitif-type products that will be consumed this summer, and even where they will be purchased. These Olympics could generate more than 10.5 billion euros in profits and create more than 250,000 jobs in Île-de-France.

It is expected that there will be 10 to 20% more bottles of beer compared to a typical summer, and up to 15% more still water and fruit juices. Sales will also be up 8 to 12% for aperitif biscuits, chips and peanuts. For pizzas, it will be 5 to 10% additional purchases.

Sports fans on television do not intend to waste time in the kitchen or in the shops. In Île-de-France, shopping will be done by delivery, in local convenience stores or possibly on site, as close as possible to the competition venues for ticket holders, according to the institute Nielsen IQ.

But with a quarter of the tests occurring during meal times, cafes, bars, restaurants and even fast food restaurants will also benefit from an influx of customers wanting to gather around a screen. The authorities also plan to double the number of checks compared to 2023 to avoid any health problems during the Olympic Games.

The impacts of the Olympics will therefore be rather local in Paris and in the host cities. The London Games had thus stimulated consumption in the capital by almost 5.5 points, compared to a small increase of 0.4% at the national level. But the weather will also have a major effect, if it is as good as, perhaps, the number of French gold medals.
