Bolton launches new Ryder Cup 2035 bid as major funding package is unveiled

Bolton has launched a fresh bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2035, aiming to bring the prestigious golf tournament back to England for the first time since 2002.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has unveiled a significant infrastructure funding package.

This includes a £70 million link road between the M61 and M6, to support a purpose-built course at Hulton Park.

Previous attempts by the town to host in 2026 and 2031 failed. However, this latest push is framed as more credible, with significant investment addressing earlier transport and infrastructure concerns.

Bolton faces competition from the London Golf Club in Kent and Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.

Mayor Burnham underscored the necessity of these improvements, stating: “We’ve had promising conversations about bringing the tournament to a bespoke, world-class course at Hulton Park, but it will only be possible with the right infrastructure.”

Next year’s Ryder Cup is due to take place at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, while the 2031 tournament is heading to Barcelona, Spain.

Meanwhile, the next three US venues have already been chosen, with the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota hosting in 2029, before the Ryder Cup moves to The Olympic Club (Lake Course) in San Francisco, California, four years later, and then is staged at the Congressional Country Club (Blue Course) in Maryland in 2037.

Europe have already confirmed that Luke Donald will captain the team once again in 2027, as he bids to complete a historic three-pear after previous wins in 2023 and 2025.

Team USA is yet to name its captain, amid rumours that 15-time major winner Tiger Woods could be in line to lead the side.

Woods has not competed since 2024 after undergoing back surgery, but is on the comeback trail and has not ruled out playing at next month’s Masters.
