Cade Cunningham suffers collapsed lung in major blow to Detroit Pistons

Detroit Pistons’ star guard Cade Cunningham is facing a significant setback after it was confirmed he has suffered a collapsed lung, an injury expected to sideline him for at least two weeks, with a longer absence possible.

The exact timeline for his return remains uncertain, according to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The news comes as a blow to the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons, who are enjoying their best season in nearly two decades. Cunningham, an All-Star, was initially listed as out for Thursday’s game in Washington with a left back contusion.

The injury occurred during Tuesday’s victory over Washington, when Cunningham left the game midway through the first quarter.

He had dived for a loose ball and collided with Wizards guard Tre Johnson, appearing to be in discomfort before checking out of the game. The team had initially reported the issue as back spasms.

Cunningham has been instrumental to Detroit’s success this season, averaging 24.5 points and 9.9 assists.

The Pistons currently hold a 49-19 record, placing them three-and-a-half games ahead of Boston for the top spot in the East with 14 regular season games remaining. Their playoff campaign is set to commence on April 18 or 19.

An extended period on the sidelines could also jeopardize Cunningham’s eligibility for individual accolades such as the All-NBA team, which typically requires players to participate in at least 65 games. He has played in 61 games so far this season.

Following Thursday’s trip to Washington, the Pistons are due to have four straight home games, with Cunningham set to miss all of them.

The Pistons face the Golden State Warriors on Friday, before hosting the Los Angeles Lakers on 23 March, the Atlanta Hawks on 25 March and the New Orleans Pelicans on 26 March.
