Walter White’s infamous “Say my name” line gets a less sinister revival in a new commercial that made its debut during CBS’s Emmys broadcast on Sunday night.
In a 46-second spot for the beverage brand Popwell, Anna Gunn reprises her role as White’s wife Skyler, roaming around the show’s instantly recognizable suburban, stucco New Mexico home before grabbing a can of Popwell’s prebiotic sodas from the fridge.
“Trust me, cooking leads to bad things,” she says, nodding to White’s secret life as a ruthless drug kingpin who uses his chemistry genius to cook meth. In the commercial, however, Skyler is referring to sodas that “cook the flavor out of their ingredients.” Popwell, in comparison, is cold crafted, and made out of vitamins and prebiotics.
“So break from those other sodas, and their cooks,” she deadpans to the camera, menacingly. “Say their name…Popwell!
“Say my name” is one of the most iconic lines White delivers in “Breaking Bad.” In Season 5, Episode 7, he confronts rival dealers who doubt his power. Instead of negotiating humbly, he asserts his dominance by demanding they say his name. One of the men says, “You’re Heisenberg.” Walt replies, “You’re goddamn right.”
“There’s something so refreshing about a brand that’s doing something different,” Gunn tells Variety about Popwell. “I know from my previous TV life that cooking can lead to bad things. So, I love that Popwell keeps it cool — literally!”
