Bondi beach shooting – latest updates: 10 dead after major attack in Sydney as people seen running from scene

Ten people have been killed – including one suspected gunman – following a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi beach.
Police warned the number of casualties could change as 11 further people, including two police officers, have been injured. A second alleged gunman is in a critical condition.
A number of suspicious items located in the vicinity of the attack are also being examined by specialist officers, New South Wales Police Force confirmed.
A New South Wales Ambulance spokesperson said crews were called to the scene at around 6.45pm.
She said: “We have got more than 40 resources there including helicopter and road crews and have treated multiple patients at the scene. We have so far transported 13 patients to various hospitals in Sydney.”
Police, who locked down the area and urged the public to take shelter, quickly confirmed that two suspects had been detained following the incident on Sunday.
“The police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area,” the force said in a post on X. “Anyone at the scene should take shelter.”
Videos circulating on X, which could not be independently verified, appeared to show people on Bondi beach scattering as multiple gunshots and police sirens can be heard.
A Jewish Hanukkah celebration had reportedly started near a children’s playground in the area of the shooting – although there has been no official confirmation that this event was a target.
In a statement posted on social media, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing”.
The UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was being kept updated and his thoughts are with all impacted by the “appalling attack”.
