Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist and ally of President Trump, is dead after being shot in the neck at a campus speaking event on Wednesday.
Kirk, 31, was shot while speaking outdoors at Utah Valley University in Orem, the first stop on a tour with his organization, Turning Point USA. The news was confirmed by Trump on Truth Social.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote.
“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Video from bystanders, posted on social media, shows Kirk sitting at a booth, surrounded by hundreds of people, when a loud crack is heard. Kirk convulses and falls backwards with blood pouring from his neck as people begin screaming and running.
“A single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker,” according to an alert from Utah Valley University. The shooting suspect has not been apprehended.
Kirk was a political activist and media personality who founded influential right-wing advocacy group, Turning Point USA. He travelled with private security to events, an aide told CNN.
