Officials have so far confirmed the killing of only one militant, while about nine armed forces personnel are said to have received injuries. However, there is no official confirmation on total casualties or injuries on either side.
“Fresh reports of intermittent firing were received from the spot and the operation is going on. We cannot give any details of casualties or injuries till the operation is over,” said a senior army official in Srinagar.
The encounter started on August 1 evening in the Akhal area of Kulgam following specific inputs regarding the presence of militants in the area.
Over the past week, top Indian Army officials including Northern Army commander, J&K Police chief and senior paramilitary officials have visited the encounter spot, reviewed the preparedness of the forces and been updated about the operation.
“Search operation continues in the area,” said senior superintendent of police Kulgam Sahil Sarangal. Officials said they expected the presence of “one to two more terrorists at the spot”.The armed forces have deployed high-tech surveillance systems and elite para commando teams at the spot. The forces have sealed all the entry and exit points in Akhal village as well as nearby forested mountain area. Locals have complained that due to continuous operations they have faced shortages of essential eatables and medicine.
