Pep Guardiola: Winning the FA Cup would be ‘massively important’ for Man City

Pep Guardiola feels it is “massively important” for Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

City have had to readjust their targets this season after failing to defend their Premier League title and exiting the Champions League prematurely.

Guardiola’s side are hoping to salvage something from a disappointing campaign by beating Crystal Palace in Saturday’s final at Wembley and securing a top-five spot next week.

FA Cup history

City have won this competition a total of seven times, with their first win coming in 1903 before subsequent triumphs in 1934, 1956 and 1969, when a famed side including Colin Bell and Franny Lee beat Leicester 1-0.

Fast forward a few decades and 2011 brought the next FA Cup win and a first major trophy since the League Cup in 1976. A 1-0 win over Stoke City, courtesy of a Yaya Toure goal, gave City their first major trophy since the Mansour takeover and marked the start of the club’s current trophy-laden era.

Since then, City have won the cup on two more occasions: in 2018/19 with a 6-0 win over Watford, and in 2022/23 as part of their treble success that season.

FA Cup history

Crystal Palace have an altogether more disappointing history in this competition, having never won a major trophy but having twice been losing finalists.

In 1990, Palace played out a 3-3 draw with Manchester United at Wembley before United eventually won a replay 1-0 courtesy of a Lee Martin goal.

And in 2016, it was the same foes who conquered Palace as Jesse Lingard scored a brilliant volley to win the final in extra-time.

This match marks Palace’s third FA Cup final – could it be third time lucky for the Eagles at Wembley?
