A Florida deputy said that his injuries sustained during a shootout would have been fatal had his bodyworn camera not deflected a bullet.
On Wednesday (4 March), Volusia County Deputy Jose Rivera and trainee Deputy Jacob Gomez Lopez were investigating an alleged assault at a Deltona residence.
After slamming the door in their face, suspect Luis Diaz Polanco allegedly took out a “tan Glock” firearm and started shooting at Riveria.
One of the bullets hit Rivera “dead center in through the body camera,” which investigators believe ricocheted through his shoulder. He was also struck in his leg.
“Thank God for his body camera”, the force said. Deputies were able to pull Rivera to safety and take Polanco into custody at the scene.
