Five soldiers shot at Fort Stewart Army base in Georgia

A suspect is in custody after five soldiers were shot at a Georgia Army base.

Fort Stewart, located about an hour outside of Savannah, was on lockdown Wednesday due to an “active shooter,” officials said. The five soldiers have been moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment.

The suspected shooter is an Army sergeant, a law enforcement official told CNN. He was apprehended about 30 minutes after the base first went into lockdown, and there is no active threat to the community, officials previously said.

Officials issued an “all clear” for Fort Stewart, Wright Army Airfield and Evans Army Airfield just before 2 p.m. local time.

Governor Brian Kemp is monitoring the situation, he said on X.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp said.

The FBI is also coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division to assist with the investigation.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army base east of the Mississippi River. It’s home to thousands of soldiers and their families.

Schools lift lockdowns

The Liberty County School System has lifted its soft lockdown in the wake of the Fort Stewart shooting.

“There is no threat to schools based on the information provided by local law enforcement authorities,” a statement from the school system reads.

Appling County Schools also lifted its Level 1 lockdown.

Local PD responds to shooting

The Hinesville Police Department confirmed its officers assisted in the response to the Fort Stewart shooting.

“At this time, the scene is secure, and there is currently no evidence to suggest any ongoing or further active threat to the community,” the department said in a statement. “All questions or information regarding this incident should be directed to Fort Stewart officials. We thank all agencies involved for their swift response.”
