The Shanghai Ranking for Academic Specializations (GRAS) is one of the most prominent international classifications that measures the performance of universities in precise specializations based on completely objective data without any questionnaires or human opinions.
The classification in the 2025 edition includes about 57 specializations covering more than 20 thousand specialized units represented by more than 2000 universities from about 92 countries around the world, which It makes it an important international reference for evaluating research excellence at the discipline level.
The ranking is based on nine indicators distributed across five main categories, including the quality of world-class faculty, high-level research production, quality of publication, research impact, and international cooperation, and its methodology relies on global databases such as Web of Science and InCites, with a requirement for a minimum number of publications to enter any university within each discipline.
Shanghai Ranking began presenting its rankings for academic disciplines for the first time in 2009, Before it was officially renamed the Global Classification of Academic Specialties (GRAS) in 2017. Since then, the classification has covered specializations within the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences, annually providing a comprehensive picture of the performance of universities in about 100 countries. The classification provides an important tool for researchers, policy makers, and universities to evaluate research capabilities and compare levels of scientific excellence between academic institutions worldwide.
It is worth noting the pivotal role that the Egyptian Knowledge Bank plays in supporting scientific research, from By providing huge knowledge and scientific resources to Egyptian researchers and scientists, which directly contributed to enhancing Egyptian research production, raising the quality of international scientific publishing, and improving the international classification of universities and research institutions, within the framework of achieving Egypt’s vision for sustainable development 2030, which targets international reference as one of the basic pillars for graduating a qualified generation capable of making a breakthrough in various fields.
