I’m a weight loss coach… here is my secret trick on how to indulge as part of a healthy diet

One of the hardest parts of losing weight is maintaining a healthy diet, but one fat loss coach has shared her trick to sticking to clean eating resolutions.

Brooke Simonson, who posts under the username The Health Investment, revealed her advice in a recent TikTok video, explaining that eating in moderation is a skill that requires practice but when done right, can allow you to still enjoy your favorite foods.

In the now viral clip, Simonson divulged the key to learning how to eat a small serving of something and then stopping.

‘Today I’m using this,’ the weight loss coach said, holding up a piece of chocolate as her example.

She began by explaining that the term ‘eating in moderation’ is ‘thrown around a lot’ – and does require practice.

‘It’s a skill,’ she told her followers. ‘When I post a video like this and people are instantly in my comments saying, “nope, that wouldn’t work for me,” it is because you haven’t practiced it yet.’

Simonson likened it to ‘playing the piano and hopping into the comments section to say, “no I can’t play piano.”‘

‘It’s because you haven’t practiced yet, you haven’t learned the skill – but you can learn the skill, with practice,’ she said encouragingly.

The health coach said one of the reasons her clients have seen ‘wild success’ with weight loss is because they approach fat loss and weight maintenance behavior as a skill building activity.

She said she aims to teach people about making and maintaining good habits, which, she reminded people, must be practiced.

‘Eventually this becomes second nature,’ she shared. ‘You become proficient at them, never perfect, and that’s how your able to keep the weight off permanently.’

Simonson then pointed out she had served her portion of chocolate in a small bowl, and put away the main container with the rest of the treats.

‘I always create my small bowl and put the rest of it away,’ she said.

‘The second step is that I see that this is finite now, I’m not eating out of the container, I have put it into a finite serving dish.’

‘Therefore, I enjoy it differently when I know there’s a limited quantity,’ she pointed out. ‘I’m gonna approach how I eat this differently when I know this is the end of it, that it’s not just gonna keep coming and coming.’

She said that after eating, it is important to then practice the thought process of wanting more but telling yourself no.

In a now popular video posted online, Simonson divulged the key to learning how to eat a small serving of something and then stopping, saying an important tool is putting the snack in a separate bowl so you can't over serve yourself (stock image)

‘[You may be thinking] “I’m disappointed, that was delicious, I know there’s a hundred more, I want to go get another one,”” she suggested.

‘I practice sitting with this disappointment and understanding that this is normal. There’s nothing broken inside of me, there’s nothing wrong with me for wanting more of something that’s delicious,’ the fat loss coach shared.

However, Simonson said to use that disappointment to fuel your next move.

‘What I tell myself is that I can choose to feel disappointed now, that I want more and I’m not going to get more, or, I can feel disappointed later that I’ve overeaten,’ the expert explained.

‘I’m also disappointed that physically, I have a  lump of caramel and chocolate in my stomach that doesn’t feel good.’

Simonson suggested setting timer for 30 minutes after eating to mindfully think about what you just ate and making peace with knowing it is done.

‘The beauty of eating about enjoying the right-sized portions  in moderation is that you can enjoy them more frequently,’ she shared, adding it’s also an effective way to prevent restricting and then binging on certain foods.
