India-China discuss early resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in border talks

India and China on Tuesday discussed the early resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra during the 33rd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) held in Beijing.

The pilgrimage, an important religious journey for Indian devotees, has been on hold due to border tensions in recent years.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides, with Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (East Asia), leading the Indian delegation, and Hong Liang, Director General of Boundary & Oceanic Affairs, representing China, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

Discussions were also held around the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). According to MEA, both sides acknowledged that maintaining peace and stability at the border is essential for overall bilateral relations.

In addition to the Yatra, both countries explored measures for cross-border cooperation on trans-border rivers and worked on implementing the decisions taken during the 23rd Special Representatives’ meeting held in December 2024.


The two sides also agreed to continue diplomatic and military-level discussions and prepare for the next round of Special Representatives’ talks, set to be held in India later this year, the government added.As part of his visit, Gourangalal Das met with Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei, reaffirming India’s commitment to maintaining dialogue and cooperation with China.
