Man armed with a gun goes on a Grand Theft Auto-style carjacking rampage through Melbourne

A sensational arrest has gone down in Melbourne’s CBD this morning after police snared a suspected gun-toting carjacker.

A police helicopter was seen over the city on Tuesday morning while specialist police slid through the city in camouflage gear while carrying high-powered rifles. 

Footage swirling online including social media site Instagram depict the specialist police move up a cordoned off city street.

It’s understood the police moved up Crossley Street near main city thoroughfare Bourke Street.

CCTV vision depicted the suspect casually walking down a city street carrying a firearm while smoking a cigarette. 

According to a statement from Victoria Police, the suspect allegedly carjacked vehicles in multiple Melbourne suburbs. 

‘Police have arrested a male in Melbourne’s CBD this morning following alleged carjackings in Tarneit and North Melbourne,’ a police spokesperson said.

‘The male, who was allegedly armed with a firearm, was taken into custody to be interviewed.’

Acting Inspector Emma Lobb told media police pursued the suspect after he allegedly ‘ran out of petrol’ while he was travelling with his wife  then allegedly stole a car.

‘He has carjacked a vehicle and headed into the North Melbourne area. Once in the North Melbourne area he has carjacked another vehicle and headed into the city,’ Insp Lobb said.

‘Once in the city he dumped that vehicle around Lonsdale Street, our critical incident and SOG was deployed and they’ve safely the secured the arrest of the offender.

‘Yes, there was a firearm on the male however this has been recovered and there is absolutely no issues with safety regarding members of the public.’

Acting-Insp Lobb also praised police for their ‘fantastic response’ to the major incident. 

It’s understood the suspect sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

His wife was not injured.  

VicTraffic had previously issued alerts about closed roads due to the incident, with Lonsdale St closed in both directions between Spring and Exhibition streets.
