Tate McRae was forced to emphasise the patriotism she feels for her home country after championing Team USA in a commercial for NBC, who is broadcasting Milano Cortina 2026 in the United States.
“Y’all know I’m Canada down,” McRae, who was born in Calgary, Canada, wrote on her Instagram Story this week alongside a photo of herself holding a Canadian flag as a child.
It came after an ad featuring the 22-year-old singer-songwriter-dancer and her song, Nobody’s Girl, went live this week, where McRae asks an animated owl for directions to Milan so she can cheer on Team USA at the opening ceremony.
Some Canadians who have spent the past 12 months watching US President Donald Trump threaten to annex their country – including comedian and actor Jack Innanen – took issue with that.
“That is a crazy time to go support the United States in place of Canada on an international stage, a country that directly threatens your own. Disappointed,” Innanen wrote on his Instagram story.
McRae’s comments section on Instagram where she has nine million followers, weren’t much different.
But she’s not the only pop star from another country to cheer on Team USA. During the Thanksgiving Day Parade in November, a NBC campaign starring Dua Lipa went live.
Featuring her song Training Season, the English singer-songwriter spends the clip hyping up American athletes including Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Chloe Kim, and Alysa Liu.
Money talks, I guess.
