Mufti of Cameroon: Egypt is my homeland and I learned the fatwa at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif

Sheikh Bashir Al-Hajj, the Mufti of Cameroon, confirmed that Egypt represents his second homeland for him, as he was honored to study at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, pointing to the great role that Al-Azhar played in shaping his intellectual and religious vision.

This came during his speech at the first session of the second international symposium on the role and bodies of fatwa in the world, organized by the Egyptian Fatwa House on December 15 and 16, where he highlighted the importance of the fatwa in facing challenges. era, especially with the emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, which impose a changing reality that requires accurate understanding and continuous keeping up.

The Mufti of Cameroon explained that the fatwa today is required to be a catalyst for dialogue and promote the values of coexistence and mutual respect, by issuing fatwas that respect the rights of minorities and support joint education between different sects, stressing that the fatwa is not limited to the religious aspect only, but rather contributes to building more just, open and accepting societies. Sheikh Bashir Al-Hajj stressed the importance of creating interactive electronic platforms for fatwas that respond to people’s inquiries and keep pace with the changes of the digital age, noting that the Republic of Cameroon is characterized by great religious and cultural diversity, which makes publishing fatwas on coexistence a necessity, especially since Islam plays an essential role in the lives of Muslims in Cameroon and many East African countries.

The Mufti of Cameroon concluded his speech by emphasizing that fatwas must be more open, It contributes to building societies that respect difference and promote common human values.
