Pilot is killed in horror crash after two planes collide mid-air near Napperfield Airfield in Wedderburn- as second aircraft has miraculous escape

A pilot has died after two light aircraft collided mid-air in Sydney’s south-west.

Emergency services were called to reports of a plane crash in the vicinity of the Napperfield Airfield, in Wedderburn, near Appin, about 12.15pm on Sunday. 

One of the planes crashed into nearby bushland. The body of the sole occupant was found in the wreckage.

The pilot of the second aircraft landed safely at the airfield uninjured.

Police have set up two crimes scenes as an investigation was launched. 

‘No further information is available at this stage,’ a statement read.

Members of the public are urged to avoid the area.

An investigation into the cause of the crash will be undertaken by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
