Queen Mary is hailed the ‘best mum ever’ after finally breaking her silence over teen daughter Princess Isabella’s X-rated t-shirt scandal

Queen Mary of Denmark has officially weighed in on her daughter Princess Isabella’s recent X-rated t-shirt scandal – and her ‘perfect’ response has seen the royal heralded as the ‘best mum’.

A royal scandal erupted on August 7 when the eldest daughter of Queen Mary and King Frederik stepped out at Danish music festival Smukfest wearing a suggestive t-shirt.

The 18-year-old princess was pictured wearing a black t-shirt emblazoned with a slogan in Danish that translates as ‘f***** him yesterday’. The bold message was accompanied by an arrow pointing to the side.

Isabella’s top was a merchandise shirt for hip hop group Suspekt, who were performing at Smukfest and are known for their explicit, sexually-charged lyrics. The choice of attire quickly made headlines worldwide and attracted criticism.

Queen Mary, 53, has now belatedly addressed her eldest daughter’s t-shirt scandal – and her ‘perfect answer’ has only heightened her already enormous popularity.

While visiting Samsø on August 28, Danish television channel TV 2 directly asked Mary: ‘What do you think about the t-shirt Princess Isabella wore at the Smukfest?’

The unflappable Queen obligingly answered, with her translated response being: ‘My first thought was – is she completely gone?’.

The Australian-born Queen added, laughing: ‘But let’s put it this way… some decisions are better than others.’

The translated word for ‘gone’ is interchangeable with ‘confused’.

Queen Mary was quickly inundated with praise for her ‘perfect’ and ‘diplomatic response’ to her teenage daughter’s rebellious act.

‘I love how calm she is and that she remains so easy-minded. Best mommy!!’ read the caption of an Instagram post that shared the televised interview.

‘Very impressive response. Pure class,’ a reply added.

‘Style and grace under pressure,’ another agreed.

What impressed many most was the way Mary’s response was both appropriate for her role as a mother and respectful of her position as a public figure.

‘Love how she is basically saying she didn’t agree with her daughter’s decision, but doesn’t put her down for it,’ read part of one reply.

‘Smart response from Queen Mary, with a pointed reminder about the consequences of decisions,’ another wrote.

‘She indirectly said it was wrong and inappropriate, but in a discrete and respectful way,’ one person noted.

‘Very cleverly answered. Supportive mother,’ another said.

‘Mother goals!’ simply stated another response.

Some royal fans quickly picked up on Mary’s response, noting her subtle ‘wink’ to a previous incident involving Isabella.

Mary’s answer included the words ‘are you completely gone’, which was a very specific reference to a previous hot mic incident in 2021 involving her and her daughter.

Danish weekly entertainment and royal magazine Billed-Bladet instantly linked Mary’s response to the remark, as the words were near-identical to what Isabella said during her brother Crown Prince Christian’s 2021 confirmation.

At that time, the royal family were gathered to pose for photographs on the steps of Fredensborg Palace. Isabella, who was 14 at the time, was urged to follow her grandmother Queen Margrethe up the stairs.

But just when the teenage princess was halfway up the flight of stairs, her mother called out for her to come back down for more photos.

At the time, the frustrated teenager was caught on camera sniping to her mother, with her words translating to: ‘Did you not say I should go with Grandma? Are you completely gone/confused?’

The moment attracted considerable press attention at the time.

More recently, Isabella referenced the controversy on her 18th birthday in April during her first official royal address.

Showing maturity and growth, Princess Isabella referred back to the moment in her speech, admitting: ‘Almost four years ago, I found out that your words can be overheard when you least expect it. Today, I have no doubt that the microphone is on.’

Royal fans similarly picked up on Queen Mary’s reference to her daughter’s own words in light of the latest controversy – and praised it as another brilliant masterstroke.

‘That was the [same] answer Isabella gave her mother on the stairs at a photoshoot with the royal family a couple of years ago, so it is actually very funny and clever that the Queen uses this answer now,’ read one observant reply.

‘[Queen Mary] said it because the press had a [field] day a few years ago when Isabella was caught on a hot mic saying that to her mother on her confirmation day,’ another fan commented.

However, one cheeky reply added that Mary’s latest unswerving response to the swear-laden t-shirt was perhaps a result of her Aussie upbringing.

‘Isabella’s mum is Australian. We can cope with a bit of swearing,’ read one reply.
