Rabbitohs star Tyrone Munro to defend assault charges – but here’s why he won’t play in the NRL until next April

South Sydney star Tyrone Munro will fight serious assault allegations which have resulted in the winger being sidelined by the NRL under their no-fault stand down policy.

Munro, 20, faced Burwood Local Court on Thursday after he was earlier this month charged over an alleged domestic violence incident in April.

His solicitor Elias Tabchouri entered not guilty pleas to one count each of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

Another count of stalk/intimidate with intention to cause fear was withdrawn by NSW Police.

‘We are defending these matters,’ Tabchouri said outside court.

‘That charge couldn’t be sustained, and clearly police have taken the right course.’

Police earlier this month confirmed Munro was arrested after a report was made about an alleged domestic violence incident in April.

According to court documents, Munro is alleged to have assaulted a woman at Sydney Olympic Park between 1pm and 6pm on April 17.

The NRL said on Tuesday Munro would be stood down under its no-fault stand down rule.

Inside court on Thursday, Tabchouri told magistrate Robyn Denes the hearing shouldn’t take longer than an hour.

He requested a court date early next year, but was told the next available date was April 27.

With the 2026 NRL season starting in March, Munro will miss the start of South Sydney’s campaign.

Tabchouri said his focus is a swift resolution to the matter.

‘It’s not even about the NRL season,’ he said.

‘It’s about everyone’s welfare – our client and everyone else involved in these proceedings, including the complainant.

‘Everyone wants these over sooner rather than later. (Missing) the NRL season is a disappointment as well, but that’s secondary to everyone’s welfare.’

Munro made his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs in 2023 and has made 19 first grade appearances.
