The Minister of Culture announces the UNESCO inclusion of"Egyptian koshari" On the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage for the year 2025

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced Insert “Egyptian Koshari” On the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for the year 2025, during the meetings of the Government Committee for the Intangible Heritage held in the Indian capital, New Delhi. The Minister of Culture confirmed that the inclusion of “Egyptian Koshari” It reflects interest in the culture of the daily life of Egyptians, which represents an inherent part of identity, and he said that “koshary” The first Egyptian dish to be registered, and the coming years will witness the registration of more items linked to social and cultural practices that are passed down through generations and express the spirit of participation and diversity within Egyptian society.

 

Dr. Hanno added that this listing reflects the success of the efforts made by the Egyptian state in documenting and protecting its heritage, stressing the Ministry’s continued support for all heritage items, and enhancing cooperation with local communities, practitioners and groups that preserve these practices.

 

In the Egyptian delegation’s speech before the Governmental Committee for Intangible Heritage following the registration, Dr. Nahla Imam, Advisor to the Minister of Culture for Intangible Heritage and Egypt’s representative to the Intangible Heritage Convention, thanked and appreciated the Committee for adopting the inclusion of the “koshary…dish of daily life” element. On the Representative List of Human Heritage.

 

She stressed that this inclusion reflects Egypt’s permanent commitment to working with practitioners within and for local communities, noting that the preparation of the nomination file relied on close cooperation with groups and individuals who practice this element daily, which allowed highlighting its diversity and richness, and its role as a unified social element that reflects continuous communication within the natural and social environments.

Imam said that this achievement is the result of a long effort that began with the practitioners themselves who launched the nomination initiative, thanking the koshari restaurants and every Egyptian woman who preserves the method of preparing koshari and passing it on to her children, considering that everyone is a partner in this global recognition.

She also expressed her sincere gratitude to the Evaluation Committee for its time and efforts expended in studying the file, and to the Secretariat of the Convention for its continued support for the States Parties, stressing that this support enhances Egypt’s ability to continue its efforts.
