The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities participates in the meetings of the United Nations Tourism Organization in Saudi Arabia

Today, Sherif Fathi, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, at the head of a delegation from the Arab Republic of Egypt, participated in the activities of the twenty-sixth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNTourism), which is hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh during the period from 7 to 11 November of this year, in light of the invitation received to the Minister from both the Minister of Tourism in the Kingdom and the Secretary-General of the Organization.
The activities of this session are held under the slogan “Intelligence-Powered Tourism.” “Artificial: Redefining the Future”. This year’s session coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Tourism Organization.
The Egyptian delegation participating in the activities of this session includes Ambassador Ihab Abu Saree, Egypt’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ambassador Ihab Badawi, Egypt’s Ambassador to Spain, Professor Youmna Al-Bahar, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Engineer Ahmed Youssef, CEO of the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion, and Professor Rana Gohar, Advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Communication and Foreign Relations and General Supervisor of the General Administration of International Relations and Agreements. At the Ministry.
The Minister participated in the first and second session of the organization’s General Assembly, and during the second session, the election of Ms. Sheikha Al Nowais was approved as Secretary-General of the organization for the period 2026-2029, succeeding Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, the previous Secretary-General whose term ended, and based on the recommendation of the Executive Council at the 123rd session of the Executive Council held in Spain in May 2025.
It is worth noting that the General Assembly is preparing the meeting. It is held to approve the budget and work programme, and to discuss issues of vital importance to the tourism sector.
It also elects the Secretary-General every four years. The General Assembly is composed of Full Members and Associate Members, while Associate Members and representatives of other international organizations participate as observers.
The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the Organization, meeting to set the global tourism agenda.
UNTourism is the United Nations specialized agency for responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism. The organization, in cooperation with 160 member states, 6 associate members, and more than 500 affiliate members, works to consolidate the position of tourism as a major driver of economic growth, comprehensive development, and environmental sustainability.
