The United States postpones opening its borders to Mexican cattle due to a fleshworm parasite

US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins confirmed that her country is not yet ready to reopen the borders to import livestock from Mexico, due to the outbreak of the “new meatworm” parasite. Which threatens livestock in the region, despite its praise of the Mexican government’s efforts to contain the crisis.

The “Market Screener” platform, today, Tuesday, quoted Rollins during her visit to Mexico City and her meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum, that US President Donald Trump is “strongly focused on reopening the border,” but she explained that “the time has not yet come.” She added: “I want to be completely confident that we used all available means and understood all the details before making the decision.” The US Secretary indicated that she would hold new talks with senior US officials regarding the issue during this week, without specifying a date for reopening the borders.

Washington had closed the borders to Mexican livestock since last May after the spread of the parasite, causing damage estimated at about $1.8 billion to the economy of the state of Texas alone. Rollins explained that cooperation between the two countries has improved greatly over the past months, and described the current efforts as “the most coordinated and advanced in years,” praising the Mexican government’s commitment to combating the parasite.

Known as “meat worms,” It is a type of parasitic fly whose females lay their eggs in animal wounds, where the larvae penetrate living tissue, causing fatal damage if not treated. Rollins stressed that “protecting the southern border is an absolute priority,” stressing that “the safety of the herd is more important than any economic considerations.”
