Trump tariffs live: President to fight ruling as Stephen Miller accuses court of ‘judicial coup’

The White House will fight a federal court ruling on Donald Trump’s global tariffs, which found that the president “exceeded his authority” when he imposed his so-called “Liberation Day” levies last month.

Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, accused the court of a “judicial coup,” while White House spokesman Kush Desai savaged the court’s decision in a statement, saying it was not for “unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency.”

The U.S. Court of International Trade’s ruling also struck down the tariffs imposed by Trump on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, supposedly aimed at combating fentanyl and drug trafficking from those countries.

In New York, Wall Street opened slightly higher on the news, although across the Atlantic, the FTSE in London remained largely flat, indicating that more uncertainty is expected.

The bombshell decision, which undermines major elements of Trump’s trade policy, arose in response to a lawsuit in which the attorneys general of twelve states and several small American companies urged the court to strike down the import taxes on the grounds that Trump had exceeded his authority.
