Trump to host Cabinet meeting as DHS shutdown continues to wreck havoc at airports – Latest updates

Trump says Iran negotiating but ‘afraid to say it’

President Donald Trump is set to convene a Cabinet meeting today amid the ongoing Department of Homeland Security shutdown, which has disrupted air travel nationwide amid severe staffing shortages.

This White House sit-down, which will be open to the press, is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The 79-year-old president is expected to face questions over the 40-day shutdown, which has prompted hundreds of Transportation Security Administration workers to resign and thousands more to call out, creating massive lines and flight delays at major U.S. airports.

This week, Trump deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to over a dozen airports in an effort to assist TSA workers.

Bipartisan talks on Capitol Hill over DHS funding remain stalled, and it’s unclear when a breakthrough can be expected.

Thursday is likely to be the first Cabinet meeting for newly sworn-in DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, a former Oklahoma senator, who Trump nominated to replace Kristi Noem.

The war in Iran, which has now dragged on for more than three weeks, engulfing large swaths of the Middle East in violence, is also likely to be addressed. Multiple recent polls show most Americans are opposed to the deadly conflict.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump said he expects top Senate Democrat to make a deal to fund DHS

Ahead of Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, President Trump said that he expects Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to make a deal to fund DHS.

“Chuck Schumer, a desperate, crippled politician, who has lost control of the Radical Left Democrats, will make a deal now because he thinks that if he doesn’t, Republicans will TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, something which they should do whether he makes a deal or not,” the president wrote on Truth Social on Thursday morning.
