Documenting South Africa’s journey towards social, racial and sexual equality in the wake of its 1996 constitution promising justice and freedom for all, Zanele Muholi’s photography is as powerful as it is fearless. The image-maker’s boundary-pushing career is the focus of a new exhibition at Tate Modern, featuring over 260 photographs from a career spanning three decades.

The exhibition includes photographs ranging from Muholi’s early series Only Half the Picture, which draws attention to the persistence of violence towards LGBTQ+ South Africans in the new millennium, right through to their latest ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness), which turns the camera inwards to reflect on how themes of labour, racism and sexual politics are reflected in Muholi themself. Often monochrome yet incredibly vivid, Muholi’s photography acts as an unbridled celebration of South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry in the face of oppression.
