Arterial Sclerosis and Memory: Unveiling Unexpected Connections

Aches in the legs, especially at night, or memory and attention issues could signal arterial sclerosis, according to Anastasia Stolnaya, a general practitioner at SberHealth.

Arterial sclerosis is a chronic arterial lesion characterized by the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, narrowing artery lumens, and causing blood supply insufficiency. It serves as a trigger for the development of most cardiovascular diseases.

Often, arterial sclerosis manifests without clear signs. However, if left unchecked, it may lead to symptomatic presentations depending on the affected vessels.

“For instance, coronary artery disease may present as chest pain or heart palpitations; peripheral artery disease may result in leg pain, particularly at night when lying down. Patients with cerebrovascular involvement often report memory decline, decreased attention, reduced productivity, dizziness, and ringing in the ears. Such symptoms should prompt medical attention,” explained Stolnaya.

To timely detect the condition, individuals above 40 are advised to undergo lipid profile testing as part of routine medical check-ups, aiding in identifying levels of LDL and HDL cholesterol and assessing the risk of arterial sclerosis.

“To prevent the onset of the disease, lifestyle and dietary adjustments are recommended. This includes reducing consumption of animal products and fast carbohydrates like sweets, and lowering salt intake. Lifestyle adjustments involve maintaining a balance between work and rest, as well as increasing regular physical activity,” the specialist advised.
