Japanese stocks give up gains and close in the red

Tokyo, May 21 / WAM / Japanese stock indices closed lower today at the end of trading, giving up their morning gains.

The Nikkei Index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell by 0.31%, equivalent to 122.75 points, to reach the level of 38,946.93 points.

The broader Topix index fell by 0.3%, equivalent to 8.32 points, to reach 2759.72 points.
