"OPEC Fund" Uzbekistan grants $500 million to support sustainable development

Vienna, May 17, 2020 – The OPEC Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund) concluded a partnership framework agreement with the government of Uzbekistan, extending for five years, during the period (2024-2029), which includes the allocation of new financing worth $500 million, to support the sustainable development agenda. The OPEC Fund statement, issued by its headquarters in the Austrian capital, Vienna, announced the provision of a new loan worth $20 million to the government of Uzbekistan, to support the pre-school education project, which benefits about 30,000 children throughout Uzbekistan.

Dr. Abdul Hamid Al Khalifa, Director General of the OPEC Fund, expressed his happiness at raising the level of cooperation with Uzbekistan, and demonstrated the Fund’s readiness to support the main sectors of the economy, and expressed his feeling of pride for the Fund to join the efforts of the government of Uzbekistan and support its ambitious aspirations to become an upper middle-income country by 2030.

It is worth noting that the partnership between the OPEC Fund and Uzbekistan extends for more than 25 years, during which the Fund supported about 30 projects for the public and private sectors worth $760 million in the form of loans, and about 30% of the value of sovereign financing was allocated to projects to improve drinking water and sanitation, while it focused The Fund’s engagements with the private sector to transform the energy sector and promote renewable energy.
