The interception of a ship suspected of violating the arms embargo to Libya

Operation IRINI, implemented by the European Union, intercepted a suspicious ship off the Libyan coast, on suspicion of violating the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations on Libya, according to the Italian “Nova” news agency.

“Despite the bad weather, IRINI’s special team disembarked from a helicopter on board the ship, checked its documents, and searched several containers suspected of carrying illegal materials, in accordance with UN Resolution 2292,” the agency said.

The inspection is the first for the IRINI mission after Admiral Stefano Torchetto took command of the European Union operation at the end of last September.
