Xi Jinping’s state visit: "It is not by flattering tyrants that we demonstrate realism"says Raphaël Glucksmann indignantly

“It is not by flattering tyrants that we demonstrate realism“, Raphaël Glucksmann, MEP and head of the PS-Place publique list in the European elections, was outraged on Monday May 6 on France Inter, on the occasion of the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

If the MEP believes that“we can receive” the Chinese leader, he considers that this should not be done “in this way”. Back in Europe for the first time since 2019, Xi Jinping must notably go to the Col du Tourmalet (Hautes-Pyrénées) on Tuesday, where Emmanuel Macron spent his vacation with his grandmother. Raphaël Glucksmann rightly criticizes this program and “friendly environment”. “Xi Jinping is not our friend”, insists the chosen one. He accuses the Chinese president of having “deported the Uyghur people, repressed the Tibetans and Hong Kongers, repressed opponents and threatened the Taiwanese.” “Xi Jinping is the main supporter today of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, a war that threatens the security of Europeans,” he adds.

Raphaël Glucksmann draws a parallel with the previous state visits of Russian President Vladimir Putin, mentioning “the invitations to Fort Brégançon, the visit to the Hermitage Museum”. “And the result: no influence, no deviation from Vladimir Putin’s offensive line”regrets the MEP who fears that “the same thing [ne] is happening with Xi Jinping.

The MEP also sees in Xi Jinping “the man who leads China’s commercial strategy, who undermines our industries, our production.” He therefore hopes that Europeans “no longer be the turkeys of the joke”. Raphaël Glucksmann notes that Canada “surcharge” social dumping from China “at 235%”, whereas “Europe has a 15% surcharge”. “It’s not a deterrent”he emphasizes.
