NATO fails to agree on negotiations with Russia

NATO countries have not been able to reach consensus on negotiations with Russia on the issue of security guarantees.

The Financial Times notes that NATO allies have “capitulated to the necessity” of negotiating with Russia. Thus, Western countries want to “avoid direct rejection” of Moscow’s proposal, and therefore are trying to find “areas of mutual agreement and de-escalation of the situation.”

“The problem here is that if you say no (to Moscow’s proposals), you have no room for negotiations,” an unnamed senior NATO diplomat told the publication.

The “Financial Times” that the member states of NATO and the European Union are currently discussing how to respond to the draft agreements.
