Urgent.. The Minister of Environment launches the third phase of the National Solid Waste Management Program to build capacity and technical support

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, announced the launch of the third phase of the National Solid Waste Management Program to build capacity and technical support in the governorates located within the scope of the program’s work, in cooperation with the German International Cooperation Agency GIZ, during the meeting held to follow up on the progress of the solid waste management system in the program’s four governorates ( Assiut, Qena, Kafr El-Sheikh, Gharbia) in the presence of Professor Yasser Abdullah, Assistant Minister of the Environment for Waste Management, Dr. Hazem Al-Dhanan, Director of the National Program for Solid Waste Management, and Ms. Christine Deji, Program Director at the German International Cooperation Authority (GIZ), and representatives of the program and consulting companies, via video conference. ;

 

 

Dr. explained. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, said that during the meeting, the objectives that had been achieved in the national program in the first and second phases were reviewed, whether technical or financial, and the efforts made by the program towards participation with other stakeholders in the governorates, from civil society institutions, civil society organizations, and the public sector. The private sector, the informal sector, youth, and others to improve the waste management system. A brief overview of the third phase of the national program and what it includes in the operational plan for the four governorates was also reviewed. The focus was on the technical support provided through this component, and strategies for enhancing solid waste management capabilities in those governorates to advance In the system.  

 

The Minister of Environment added that the meeting reviewed the technical support that will be provided to the waste management units during the coming period in the program governorates to raise the efficiency of their workers from the technical, financial and contractual aspects, in addition to Encouraging the private sector to work in the system in order to ensure that it contributes to its advancement, achieving promising investment opportunities, and creating new job opportunities, by making the most of the infrastructure built with the support of the program, including intermediate stations, processing and recycling plants, sanitary landfills, and equipment for collection, transportation, and street cleaning, where the necessary coordination will be put in place. With the governorates through the program to ensure the technical support required for those governorates. 

 

 

Dr. indicated. Yasmine Fouad said that the support will include training waste management units on how to prepare reports and carry out the monitoring and follow-up process, stressing the importance of including civil society organizations in the system, in addition to updating the master plan for the waste management system in the four governorates.

 

 

In a related context, Dr. Hazem Adnan, Director of the National Solid Waste Management Program, aims of the new phase of the project in enhancing the program’s achievements in the previous two phases to advance the system and achieve its objectives in adapting to climate change, reducing global warming, achieving the objectives of the circular economy, and encouraging the participation of the private sector, in addition to introducing new legislative frameworks and applying them in The governorates are in addition to strengthening the institutional capabilities of waste management units through digital monitoring and focusing on capacity building by providing training courses for system workers, laying the foundations for strategic planning to advance them, and facilitating communication channels between civil society institutions and waste management units in the governorates and relevant ministries.

 For his part, Professor Yasser Abdullah, Assistant Minister of the Environment for Waste Affairs, stressed the importance of encouraging civil society organizations and the private sector to enter the system and work to improve the operation of the system. Which took place in the four governorates, adding that coordination will be made with the governorates to establish controls and coordination for the necessary technical support to facilitate the work of consulting agencies.
