Minister of Irrigation: Egypt is keen on international cooperation to integrate water into the global climate action agenda

 The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sweilem, stressed Egypt’s keenness to continue joint work with all countries and regional and international organizations to achieve more successes in integrating water into the global climate action agenda, which the World Meteorological Organization will have a prominent role in. This can be achieved through technical support for these efforts.

The Minister pointed out the importance of the role of the World Meteorological Organization in supporting the international initiative to support adaptation and resilience in the water sector (AWARe), and also formulating messages for the third interactive dialogue on water and climate, which was held within “United Nations Water Conference” events In March 2023.

 

This came during a meeting held by the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation with the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Dr. Celeste Saulo, on the sidelines of the “Forum.” The 10th World Water It was held in Bali, Indonesia.

 

With regard to dealing with the negative effects of climate change, Dr. Sweilem indicated Egypt’s constant readiness to cooperate with all parties to enhance the ability of countries to deal with climate change, Especially during the current period that witnesses Egypt’s presidency of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCO), as Egypt is keen to submit project proposals to the Council in the field of adaptation, and to provide Egypt with the necessary training in the field of climate through the “African Center for Water and Climate Adaptation.”

 

The Minister highlighted the cooperation of the Ministry of Irrigation with the Regional Meteorological Training Center, especially in light of the need for African countries to enhance their capabilities in the field of early warning systems by establishing these systems and training specialists in their operation and maintenance. These systems, pointing to the role of the “AWARe” initiative In providing the necessary support in this field.

 

In light of Egypt’s hosting during next October of the "Seventh Cairo Water Week" And “African Water Week” And the “African Hydrological Conference of the World Meteorological Organization,” Sweilem stressed the importance of these events in holding a constructive dialogue between the water ministers of African countries and Middle Eastern countries to present important ideas and proposals for financing water and climate projects in African countries.
