Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said: His country bears the greatest burden among the countries of the region and the world regarding the issue of hosting the displaced… expressing his rejection of Lebanon becoming an alternative homeland.
He added – during a press conference following his meeting today, Thursday. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Beirut, according to the Lebanese News Agency – that Lebanon was keen to cooperate with various European and international bodies and organizations in this file, but the current reality of this issue has become greater than Lebanon’s ability to bear, especially since the number of displaced people It has become approximately one-third of the Lebanese population, with the resulting burdens and challenges that double Lebanon’s economic and financial crisis and the deterioration of its infrastructure.
He expressed his firm conviction that Lebanon’s security is the security of European countries and vice versa, and that serious and constructive cooperation is needed to resolve this issue. It represents the real gateway to stabilizing the situation, taking into account mutual respect, fruitful cooperation, and European and international awareness to preserve Lebanese privacy, which constitutes a moral value for the East and West.
Mikati expressed his country’s appreciation for the European Union’s position in supporting the military and security institutions in Lebanon to enable them to control Sea and land borders and carrying out its duties in preventing illegal immigration to and from Lebanon, supporting Lebanese communities in need, and at the same time allocating part of the support to stimulate the voluntary return of displaced Syrians
