The UN General Assembly recommended that the Security Council approve Palestinian membership

The UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution submitted by the UAE recommending that the Security Council approve the membership of the Palestinian Authority as a full member of the organization. 143 countries voted for the document, 9 were against (including the USA, Israel, Hungary and the Czech Republic). 25 UN members abstained. Among them are Britain, Ukraine and Georgia.

The resolution also, starting with the next session of the General Assembly in September, provides Palestinians with additional rights and privileges. The delegation, in particular, will be able to put forward proposals and amendments directly, and not through another country, as is the case now; take places among UN member countries in alphabetical order; to be elected by members of the Palestinian delegation as officers in plenary sessions and in the main committees of the General Assembly.

Acceptance of the Palestinian Authority as a full member requires the approval of the Security Council, and then the decision must receive a two-thirds vote in the General Assembly.

On April 19, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution on this issue. Then the veto was imposed by the United States as a permanent member of the Security Council.

Since 2012, the Palestinian Authority has been an observer state at the UN.
