The Russian Federation appropriated over 13 thousand houses and apartments in the territories of Ukraine

Russia “nationalized” at least 13 thousand 300 houses and apartments in the territories of Ukraine occupied by its troops, approved in an investigation by the Novaya Gazeta Europe publication.

We are talking about real estate whose owners fled the war to other countries. According to the investigation, housing is essentially taken away if the owners do not return home within a month, declaring it ownerless.

The authorities officially appointed by Russia promised to seize housing only from those Ukrainian citizens who have left since 2014 and have no intention of returning. At the same time, according to Novaya Gazeta Europe, about 80% of all real estate recognized as ownerless is located in the recently occupied territories. Thus, in terms of the number of “nationalized” housing, the leaders are now Mariupol, Melitopol and Svatovo – cities captured by the Russian army in the spring of 2022.

  • By data UN as of January of this year, about 10 million Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes due to the outbreak of full-scale hostilities and have not yet returned. More than six million of them went abroad, the rest moved to other regions of Ukraine.
