The United States abandons the Israeli gas pipeline EastMed

The United States sent the countries participating in the EastMed pipeline project a non-paper, in which it notified that it was abandoning the pipeline.

According to the official representative of the Green Movement party, Nikos Karabasis, the United States states in the document that Washington refuses to support this project.

Haaretz newspaper had earlier written that the Israeli government had agreed to a framework agreement with Greece and Cyprus to build a gas pipeline in the eastern Mediterranean.

The agreement was signed by the ministers of the three countries on January 2, 2020 in Athens. It specifies the agreement of the two parties on the construction of the gas pipeline and the accession to the Italian project.

The EastMed pipeline will allow the supply of energy resources from Israel’s Leviathan field and Cyprus’ Aphrodite field through the islands of Cyprus and Crete to mainland Greece, and possibly to Italy.

According to Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, the gas pipeline will become a “historic milestone in Israel’s transformation into an energy exporter”.
