EU decides to extend restrictions targeting “specific sectors of the Russian economy”

The European Union has extended economic sanctions against Russia, which were imposed in July 2014 for “measures that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”. This was reported by the website of the Council of the European Union.

A statement on the website of the Council of the European Union said that the Council decided to extend the restrictions targeting “specific sectors of the Russian economy, for a period of 6 months, until July 31, 2022”.

Last December, Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn said that the sanctions to be imposed on Russia in the event of an attack on Ukraine would also be a burden for the EU. He pointed out that therefore no one wanted to recognize such a situation.

At the same time, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, indicated that the EU is ready – in cooperation with partners, including the United States – to expand sanctions against Russia if the situation around Ukraine escalates.
