Luke Keary to retire at end of season

Sydney Roosters five-eighth Luke Keary will retire at the end of the season.

Just a few days after the club’s emphatic victory over St George Illawarra on Anzac Day, Keary will inform teammates on Monday he will finish up at the end of 2024.

Two months ago, the Roosters announced Keary had signed an extension with the club until at least the 2025 season following conversations with coach Trent Robinson to take it one year at a time.

However, after a series of talks with close friends and family, the three-time premiership-winning five-eighth has decided to end his decorated career.

On Monday afternoon, Keary will break the news to his teammates about the decision to join a growing list of Roosters players heading for the exit at the end of the season.

The club will also lose veteran prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Super League), Joseph Manu (rugby union) and Joseph Suaalii (rugby union), while question marks remain over the futures of Daniel Tupou and Angus Crichton.

Tupou, 32, is mulling over playing next year, while Crichton is off contract. Crichton has been one of the Roosters’ best in recent weeks and could go around in the NRL next year despite expressing an interest in switching to the 15-man code.

Keary’s decision to retire has nothing to do with his battle with concussions, rather it is a reflection of his contentment with what he has achieved since his debut for South Sydney in 2013.
