Evacuations and highway closures in California due to fires

California wildfires have forced evacuations to close one of the state’s major highways.

Rampant items were found near the coastal village of Big Sur, and local residents were urged to evacuate.

The fire started in a nearby valley, and was blown by winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour toward the sea and across California Highway 1. At least six square kilometers burned.
