New Caledonia: for the local Medef, "the situation is not at all stabilized"

In New Caledonia, “the situation is not at all stabilized, from our point of view”affirms Mimsy Daly, president of the Medef of the archipelago, Friday May 17 on franceinfo while in the morning, the local authorities affirmed that the situation was “calmer and more peaceful in greater Nouméa”with the exception of districts “to be resumed”.

“As I speak to you, businesses are still under siege, even set on fire,” adds Mimsy Daly as night approaches. The territory has already experienced four long nights of riots and looting, against a backdrop of protests over the reform of the electoral body. “We are also facing shortage situations which tend to increase and put pressure on a certain number of companies, in particular food distribution businesses and pharmacies,” she indicates.“We are not at rationing”, however, she qualifies.

The government of New Caledonia says it has identified “sufficient stock for two months” but recognizes that “the whole difficulty lies in restocking shops and gas stations” in the Nouméa metropolitan area. “Some municipalities have lost 100% of their distribution capacity,” abounds Mimsy Daly.

As for the bill for the riots, “It is still too early” to quantify it, according to her, because “we can’t even do basic assessments to estimate the damage”. The archipelago’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry estimates that the riots have already caused more than 200 million euros in damage. Mimsy Daly “think this figure is underestimated” And “anyway, it evolves from hour to hour.” “The question of insurance will arise”as well as “that of paying salaries at the end of the month”, among others. “Thousands of jobs are affected,” she warns.
