Iran begins power transfer procedures after the president’s plane crash

TEHRAN, May 20 / WAM / Iran began the procedures for transferring power after the helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and a number of other local officials.

The First Vice President, Mohammad Mokhber, has assumed the reins of the Iranian presidency for a period of 50 days, starting today, based on constitutional articles that give the Leader the right to issue a state order delegating all powers to the Iranian First Vice President, as he is the de facto president of the country within the legal period that lasts for 50 days. Based on this, interim President Mohammad Mokhber appointed Iranian chief negotiator Ali Bagheri as a supervisor with full powers in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Iranian sources expect that the date for holding the presidential elections will be determined after the formation of the committee called for by the constitution, including the interim president and head of the Shura Council of Parliament, Muhammad Baqir Qalibaf, in addition to the head of the judiciary, Mohseni Ejei.
