The International Conference on Nuclear Security kicks off in Vienna

Vienna, May 21 / WAM / The International Conference on Nuclear Security 2024 “ICONS”, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, kicked off yesterday under the slogan “Shaping the Future” and will continue until May 24 at the agency’s headquarters in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

The conference provides a global platform for ministers, policymakers and experts to discuss the future of nuclear security around the world, exchange information and share best practices.

The conference aims to raise awareness of issues related to maintaining national nuclear security and strengthening systems for nuclear and other radioactive materials and associated facilities used for peaceful purposes, in addition to strengthening the International Atomic Energy Agency’s directives in the field of nuclear security and the experiences of countries in applying them, and discussing further improvements to nuclear security activities. affiliated with the agency and ensuring its sustainability.

The conference’s work includes reviewing nuclear security experiences and achievements, current approaches and trends, and highlighting areas that may need more attention, including technological dimensions.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a statement issued by the agency that with the increasing use of nuclear and other radioactive materials around the world, many countries need to increase their level of nuclear security, as it is no less important than nuclear safety.

He added: “We at ‘ICONS 2024’, as the name of the conference indicates, are shaping the future, not only of nuclear security, but of the world that our children will inherit. This is because nuclear security is not only limited to preventing nuclear threats, but rather is an enabling tool for providing clean energy through science and technology.” Nuclear medicine and advanced medicine, which is the hope for a better tomorrow.”
