36 people die due to highway collapse in China

In southern China, at least 36 people were killed and another thirty were injured due to a highway collapse. writes Associated Press, citing local authorities.

The road collapse occurred late at night in a mountainous area near the city of Meizhou. The length of the collapsed section was 18 meters, 23 cars slid into the hole.

Authorities blame heavy rains as the cause of the highway collapse. The affected area received 56 centimeters of rain over the past month, four times more than last year. The downpours continue even now, complicating the work of search services.

The AP also notes that investigations into road failures in China often reveal flaws in road design and construction methods. In addition, transport infrastructure often lacks regular inspections and maintenance.
